As a elderly care provider, we see the effects of flu season every year. For older adults, flu can lead to hospital stays, longer recovery, and loss of independence. Families often ask what truly makes a difference. The answer lies in a few clear actions, done well and done early.
This guide sets out the steps we follow in our care and the steps families can support at home.
Vaccination remains the strongest defence
The annual flu jab sits at the centre of flu prevention for older adults. The immune system weakens with age, so protection from previous years does not last. A fresh vaccine each year matters.
For adults aged 65 and over, the NHS offers a high-dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine. These versions create a stronger immune response than the standard jab. That added protection lowers the risk of severe illness and complications.
We encourage clients to book their flu vaccination as early as it becomes available, usually from September. Early vaccination gives the body time to build protection before flu spreads widely. Our care teams remind clients and families and support attendance at appointments where needed.
Hand hygiene breaks the chain of infection
Flu viruses spread easily through hands. A simple habit can stop that spread.
Hands should be washed with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This includes palms, backs of hands, between fingers, thumbs, and under nails. Handwashing matters before meals, after using the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, and after returning home.
Alcohol hand gel works when soap and water are not nearby, but it does not replace proper washing. In our care visits, staff clean their hands on arrival and before personal care. Families and visitors should do the same.
Coughs, sneezes, and masks
Coughs and sneezes release droplets that carry flu. Covering the mouth and nose reduces that risk straight away. A tissue works best. The tissue should go into a bin after one use, followed by handwashing.
Masks offer another layer of protection. Wearing a mask in crowded indoor places or during close contact lowers the chance of passing on infection. This step feels simple, yet it protects people whose health leaves little room for illness. We ask staff to wear masks during periods of high flu activity and encourage visitors to do the same.
Is wearing a mask really worth it? Yes, it reduces spread and protects those most at risk.
Stay home when illness appears
One rule matters above all others. Anyone who feels unwell must stay away from older adults.
Flu often starts with fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, or sudden tiredness. Staff members who feel unwell do not attend visits. Visitors should postpone contact until they feel fully well again. This protects the client and protects others in the household.
Families sometimes worry about cancelling visits. A short delay prevents far greater harm.
Clean surfaces stop silent spread
Flu viruses can live on surfaces for hours. Regular cleaning lowers that risk.
Frequently touched items need daily attention during flu season. These include door handles, light switches, remote controls, phones, tables, and kettle handles. A standard household disinfectant works well. In care settings, we follow strict cleaning routines and support clients to keep their homes safe.
Support the body’s natural defences
Flu prevention does not stop with hygiene. General health supports the immune system.
Older adults benefit from regular sleep, balanced meals, and steady hydration. Warm drinks help maintain fluid intake. Meals with fruit, vegetables, and protein support recovery if illness occurs. Our carers monitor eating, drinking, and rest, and raise concerns early.
Our role at Soma Healthcare
As an elderly care provider, we take flu prevention seriously. We train staff in infection control, enforce sickness policies, and support vaccination uptake. We work with families to create a shared plan that keeps loved ones safe through winter.
Flu season brings challenges, but clear steps reduce risk. Vaccination, clean hands, masks, staying home when ill, and a clean environment protect health and independence. These actions, taken together, make a real difference. Trust us as your elderly care provider.
