Simple Outings with a Loved One
September is World Alzheimer's Month. This year, the campaign is “it will take a society to beat dementia.” This message comes from Dementia Friends, an organisation dedicated to changing how people think about dementia. At Soma, we know that caring for a person with Alzheimer’s is a deeply personal journey. We also know that even as the disease progresses, moments of shared time can bring comfort. An outing is not about a grand gesture. It is about a quiet, simple moment. It is about being together, with a hand to hold.
When a day out is planned and done gently, it can make a real difference. Here are a few thoughtful ideas for simple outings. These outings are designed for peace of mind.
A Walk in the Park
Nature calms all of us. A walk in a familiar park can be a beautiful experience. The key is to choose a familiar and quiet place. Look for a path that is flat. Benches for resting should be close by. The sound of leaves, the smell of flowers, or the sight of birds can spark a moment of connection. There is no need for a destination. The goal is simply to be together. You can even bring a simple picnic to share.
A Trip to a Botanical Garden
If a park feels too open, a botanical garden can work. It is more structured but still natural. Conservatories are great. They are often warm and have benches throughout. The bright colors and unique shapes of the plants can bring wonder. The peaceful environment allows for wandering. There is no worry about getting lost. The crowds are not overwhelming.
The Local Library
A library can be a haven of quiet reflection. Many people find them comforting. You do not have to read. You can simply sit in a comfortable chair. A magazine with large, colorful pictures can be looked at. A children's book with a gentle story can be found. The hushed air and the smell of old paper can be soothing. It offers a quiet escape from a noisy world.
A Quiet Café
A warm cup of tea and a sweet treat are a joy. Find a small, independent café that is not too busy. An outdoor patio is a good option. It provides fresh air. You can watch the world go by. The gentle sounds of a café can be comforting. The clinking of cups and the low murmur of talk are peaceful. This outing is not about a destination. It is about sharing a simple moment.
A Drive on a Scenic Route
Sometimes, the best outing does not require getting out of the car. A drive on a country road or along the coast is a good activity. It is low stress. You can play familiar music from their younger years. Music often triggers memories. It can bring moments of joy and clarity. You can point out trees or the sky. The beauty of the journey is enough.
How to Make the Outing Stress-Free
A peaceful park can feel daunting for someone who is not confident walking. The person may need a toilet close by. They may also tire easily. This is where a family member or a good carer can help. They help with the pace of the day. They can arrange travel and keep the pace comfortable. A rest can be suggested when needed. A warm drink can be offered before heading home. This ensures that the person feels calm, not rushed. It is the small things that turn a tiring outing into a pleasant one.
Timing is everything. Choose a time when your loved one feels best. Mornings are often a good choice.
Keep it short. A successful outing does not have to be long. Even 30 minutes can be meaningful.
Pack a familiar bag. Include a favourite blanket, water, a snack, and medicine. Familiar items provide security.
Be flexible. An outing may not go as planned. That is okay. The most important thing is the effort to connect. If a moment becomes hard, it is alright to go home.
These shared experiences are for the carer too. They are a way to find moments of peace. The person with Alzheimer's is still there. Opportunities for connection still exist.
This World Alzheimer’s Month, let’s remember that every person with dementia is a cherished part of our society. It will take a society to beat dementia. It starts with a hand to hold and a gentle moment of shared presence.
